Imagine! The AAI newsletter, October 2013

Hello everyone, here's the latest news from AAI for this quarter:

New Affiliate / Associate Groups

I last introduced you to new group members in our May newsletter. Since then, we've had six new groups join the AAI network: Affiliate members the Atheist Association of the Czech Republic and Sydney Atheists Incorporated (Australia) and Associate members Hofesh-Freedom from Religion NPO (Israel), the Atheist Community of South East Queensland (Australia), the Humanist Society (Singapore) and the Associación de Ateos y Agnosticos del Atlántico (Colombia). Welcome to all.

Secular World Magazine Has New Editor
We are pleased to announce that David Smalley of Dogma Debate, LLC is the new Editor-In-Chief of Secular World magazine. David has a lot of experience in print, electronic and social media and we're confident that he will bring a fresh approach and vital energy to Secular World. Watch for his first issue to come out soon and please give us your feedback. As always, you are encouraged to submit letters, articles and feedback to David at secularworld@atheistalliance.org.

AAI Has New Reporting Tool for Atheist Discrimination
In recent months, a new site, www.freethoughtreport.org, has been constructed by the International Humanist and Ethical Union and the Center for Inquiry - International to assist in gathering and reporting information on discrimination and oppression against atheists and ex-religionists from around the world. This information is being used by the three organizations to bring such cases to the attention of national and international human rights organizations as well as organize social and legal action when possible.

This site can be accessed through the AAI home webpage under the 'Resources' menu. If you know or learn of any cases of atheist discrimination, we encourage you to look up this site and let us know about it!

AAI At Skepticon VI This November
AAI has become one of the main sponsors of Skepticon, the free skeptic festival held in Springfield, Missouri USA each year. The event attracts over 1,000 people from all over the United States and is a lot of fun. We'll be there the weekend of November 15-17 tabling in the vendors area! Stop by if you happen to attend!

AAI Announces New Secular School in The Gambia
Following on the heels of our first school that we sponsored in Uganda in 2010, AAI has now announced a second secular school it is sponsoring, this one in The Gambia. The Escuela Moderna Kerewan Kindergarten, an exclusive project of the Gambia Secular Assembly, opened this September with 2 kindergarten and 1 day-care class as the first such private school in the country. They had expected to attract enough for only one class the first year, but the interest from the local families was so great that they had to scramble at the last minute to provide the space and staff to meet the demand! While this is a great start for the school, they are also finding themselves under pressure to complete a number of unexpected repairs and improvements to accommodate the larger project.

They are needing about US$5,000 to complete these repairs in order for the Ministry of Education to grant a permanent license to allow them to operate their school beyond this year. AAI is collecting contributions to help the school meet this goal! Please consider a year-end gift to keep this light of reason in The Gambia open for the long-term.

Pending Volunteer Opportunities
We have a number of volunteer opportunities for which we would like to find supporters who have the time and wish to become more active in AAI's activities. If you are interested in any of the opportunities below, please express your interest to membership@atheistalliance.org.

We are radically revamping our semi-monthly Secular World podcast format to provide more energy and diversity of opinions from around the globe. Instead of two co-hosts presenting topics of interest each week, we are going to have one permanent host and a rotating panel of experts and pundits who will be called upon to participate as requested along with the headline guests. We are looking for authors, bloggers, scholars and activists who would like to be called upon to participate in upcoming shows. If you are interested, please send a one-page bio of topics of interest and any experience you might be able to provide, along with your city, state / province, country, your email address you'd like us to use to contact you, and how often you would like to be invited to participate on the show.

To support this new format, we are also seeking one or two Program Directors who will be responsible for planning the show topics and scheduling the podcast guests each episode. Experience is not a requirement for this role, although a talent for organization and meeting deadlines, an eye or ear to contemporary issues, and a willingness to reach out and talk to people are definite plusses. You will be working closely with the podcast host and the AAI Board liaison to plan our weekly podcasts and ensure that our guests are prepared and present.

We are also seeking two audio engineers to alternate in providing show post-production services (edit the recordings, add standard intros, breaks, and wrapups, and post it to our hosted podcast site). Each show can take a couple of hours to edit and finish. This opportunity does require someone with experience in audio mixing as well as access to audio mixing equipment.

We are also seeking an advisor on non-profit membership and fund development to provide advice on expanding and strengthening our support base. If you have experience and would like to review our plans, we would love for you to get in touch.

We are also seeking an experienced advisor on marketing, including social media. As an organization that operates and promotes almost entirely on the internet, AAI is on a number of social media platforms and expect to intensify our activities there. We want to make sure that we are maximizing our effectiveness and visibility in our use of these media channels.

We have a vacant position on our Board of Directors and are eager to fill it with a smart, enthusiastic atheist with experience and knowledge relevant to managing advocacy groups or NGO's. As an all-volunteer organization, Directors are the primary people responsible for keeping AAI going, with most overseeing at least one volunteer team or task force in their role. If this appeals to you and you would like to share your talents and skills to help us fulfill our mission, please write to membership@atheistalliance.org and we'll send you a Potential Director Briefing Pack that outlines in more detail our application requirements and expectations. Please respond quickly, as we'd like to be able to fill the seat at our meeting on November 24th.

We Appreciate Your Ongoing Support!
We've updated our online membership forms and are pleased to be able to offer a new automatic renewal option for annual memberships. If you join or renew as a Student, Individual, Household or Supporting member, you can now choose to have your membership automatically renew each year and your membership fee will be automatically charged to your credit card or Paypal account. Of course, the old option of renewing it manually also remains available.

It is through you that we are able to promote reason and science worldwide while confronting and challenging religious privilege and superstition. Thanks for being a part of AAI!
